For hospitals, uninterrupted power supply is often – literally – a matter of life or death. In 2017, Vanparijs Engineers, now Luminus Solutions, renovated the dynamic UPS installation at the Sint-Trudo regional hospital in Sint-Truiden. This installation was installed in 1997. As a result of the renovation, Sint-Trudo is assured of a high-quality uninterrupted power supply for the next 20 years.
Dynamic, but also sustainable UPS
At the time, the project was unique in its kind. It was the first time a 20-year-old UPS installation had been completely upgraded. Normally, an end-of-life UPS installation is completely replaced, which entails a considerable investment and sometimes major changes to the existing infrastructure. With this “upgrade” solution from Luminus Solutions, the hospital was able to continue working with its familiar UPS installation without having to invest in a new machine.
CHP integrated into future plans
Luminus Solutions also installed a 350 kW CHP at Sint-Trudo. During the study phase, various options were considered for the location of the plant. Because the hospital’s expansion plans had to be taken into account, the CHP could not occupy any additional outdoor space. Therefore, the power plant was allocated within the existing building, in the existing boiler room. The installation was equipped with a 12000 litre buffer vessel on the outside of the building. The buffer vessel makes the CHP more profitable and flexible because it can buffer a lot of heat.
“Sint-Trudo went with Luminus Solutions again for the installation of the CHP because, in addition to their competitive offer, they know the UPS installation and the site very well. This is a great advantage, because complex electrical work had to be done without risking the hospital’s electricity supply. Luminus Solutions is responsible for the maintenance of both the UPS installation and the CHP.” (Erik Maesen, Purchasing and Logistics Manager, Sint-Trudo Hospital)
