MSD (Merck, Sharp & Dohme) is one of the global market leaders in the pharmaceutical industry. At the production site in Heist-Op-Den-Berg, Vanparijs Engineers, now Luminus Solutions, installed a UPS installation and a CHP plant in 2018.
Approach within corporate vision sustainability
The energy efficiency project of Luminus Solutions in Heist-Op-Den-Berg fits in nicely with MSD’s policy on the environment and sustainability. MSD wants to improve the operational safety, contribute to a sustainable energy supply and reduce the CO₂ consumption at the production site in Heist-Op-Den-Berg. By 2025, MSD wants to reduce its global greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent compared to 2015.
CHP provides the majority of energy production
As a first step, Luminus Solutions investigated the potential for energy efficiency. A feasibility study mapped out MSD’s heat demand and showed that there was great CHP potential. The study resulted in the construction of a 1560 kWe CHP. From the CHP, a heat network was also laid, to which as many heat consumers as possible within the production site were connected. The power produced by the CHP is placed on the grid. In this way, the Luminus Solutions installation is responsible for most of the electricity production on the site.
UPS installation increases the quality of production processes
A second study mapped out the impact of power outages on the grid on the quality and continuity of production processes. For certain parts of the production process, for example in the sterile department, even the briefest voltage dip (caused by a short power failure) is disastrous. So a solution had to be found to avoid ‘voltage dips’. This came in the form of the 1000kVA UPS installation that we built in two containers in the site car park.
Luminus Solutions also takes care of the maintenance of both installations and guarantees their availability and efficiency. The combination of design, integration, civil works, machinery supply and maintenance by one and the same party brings considerable benefits to MSD and is the key to a successful project.
