In recent years, we have implemented two new CHP (Combined Heat and Power) projects for the hospital group Vivalia, at its sites in Arlon and Marche-en-Famenne. With these investments, Vivalia is not only focusing on energy efficiency, but also on reducing CO₂ emissions and achieving financially viable operations.

Vivalia is a hospital group in the province of Luxembourg, with several sites including the hospitals in Arlon and Marche-en-Famenne. For its energy projects, the group was looking for a reliable partner with solid CHP expertise and a strong understanding of the specific needs of a hospital environment. Based on our long-standing cooperation with the Arlon site, our technical know-how and tailored solutions, we responded to Vivalia’s tender for a new installation in Marche-en-Famenne. After careful analysis of the proposals, the project was awarded to us.

A long-term relationship

Our relationship with Vivalia goes back more than ten years. In 2014, we were awarded the contract for the construction of the existing CHP installation at the Arlon site—a project that has proven its value year after year. With our experience in the design, installation and maintenance of CHP systems in the healthcare sector—an environment with a constant demand for heat and electricity that aligns perfectly with CHP—we continue to be the ideal partner for such energy solutions.

Two recent projects

Over the past year in Arlon, we carried out a full overhaul of the existing 365 kWe CHP installation that we built in 2014. Thanks to this intervention, the unit—which had already accumulated more than 65,000 operating hours—can run for at least another 25,000 hours. In addition to overhauling the engine and generator, various components were renewed, pipes and pumps were replaced, and everything was thoroughly cleaned and tested. The installation was recommissioned at the beginning of 2024—perfectly timed for the heating season.

At the Hôpital Princesse Paola site in Marche-en-Famenne, we delivered a completely new CHP installation (357 kWe) based on a reliable MAN engine. Beyond installing the unit itself, we also integrated it with the existing electrical and heat networks, including a buffer tank for optimal operation. The installation was commissioned at the end of 2022 and has since been maintained and monitored remotely by our own team.

Only advantages

The benefits for Vivalia are significant:

  • The refurbished installation in Arlon has a payback period of only 2.5 years, while maximum use of green certificates is guaranteed until 2028.

  • In Marche-en-Famenne, the project will reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 35%, thanks to an electrical efficiency of 38% and a thermal efficiency of 51%, with a payback period of just over 5 years.

Thanks to maintenance contracts and our 24/7 monitoring, Vivalia can count on high availability and operational reliability for both installations.

Proud of a sustainable collaboration

We are proud to have carried out these two projects for Vivalia—delivering not only energy-efficient solutions, but also contributing to the hospital group’s sustainability goals.

The projects at Vivalia are a perfect illustration of our mission to reduce CO₂ emissions, improve energy efficiency, and provide reliable energy solutions for healthcare institutions.
