Annual CO₂ savings of 1,500 tonnes at Kaneka thanks to renewed CHP installation

What was our approach?
Building upon more than ten years of close collaboration, Kaneka again chose Luminus Solutions to replace two ageing CHP units (2 × 2 MWe). We started with a detailed analysis of the existing setup, preserving valuable infrastructure such as casing, piping, pumps, and valves. This approach reduced both investment costs and project timelines.
Installation was deliberately phased. The first new engine was installed in December 2024, enabling the second old unit to serve as a backup during winter. The second engine was replaced in May 2025, after which both units could operate almost continuously. Concurrently, we modernized the gas intake system, control cabinets, fans, heat exchangers, flue gas coolers, catalysts, and dry-coolers, supplemented with additional gas valves and vibration dampers to further enhance safety and reliability.
What was the result?
- 2 new engines of 2 004 kWe each (total 4 MW electrical power)
- > 25 % primary energy savings compared to separate generation
- ≈ 1 500 tonnes CO₂ reduction per year during the remaining certificate period
- High availability thanks to phased installation and winter back-up
- 10-year omnium maintenance contract (60 000 hours of operation) with guaranteed savings
- Lower CAPEX by reusing existing infrastructure
- Improved safety and reliability with double throttle valves and renewed damping
- Contribution to Kaneka’s EBO commitment and long-term climate roadmap
